Balance at end of as_of. Open loan/property accounts answer with their latest valuation at or before that date (decision 42); open brokerage accounts add their latest holdings market value on top of the postings basis (decision 50); everything else answers from the stored running balances (decision 37), never recomputed. 0 before first activity; closed accounts answer for their whole history.
